Historic Atlântico Garage 'returned' to Porto as creative space after 10 million investment

Eco10 September 2026 at 08:58

The historic Garage Atlântico, in Porto, will be transformed into a creative and cultural space with full opening planned for 2028. The investment exceeds 10 million euros, supported by around 40 foreign investors, some of whom live in Porto. The former bus terminal operated for 40 years until 2017, when it closed, remaining abandoned for a decade. Located on Rua de Alexandre Herculano, next to Teatro Nacional São João, the space will have temporary openings over time, beginning today until Sunday with music, gastronomy and other attractions for the public.

The project is led by Filipe Teixeira, linked to Plano B and Pizzaria Generosa, alongside José Rebelo, involved in Faktory Club, OutJazz and 8 Marvila. Architect Sérgio Rebelo is designing the new space, which will include a second floor above the level where the garages previously parked, maintaining the original structure, ceiling, walls and floor. The space will have two accesses, from Rua de Alexandre Herculano and from Rua de Entreparedes, allowing passage through it.

The new facility will bring together culture, art, design, entrepreneurship, shops, food and drink. It will have workspaces, pop-up shops that can be rented for a month, small creators, startups, a black box for concerts and theater with independent entrance, restaurant areas, exhibitions, dance and a radio station, among other artistic expressions. The idea is to create a creative and artistic laboratory that functions as a living space, open from morning until 10 PM during the week, with some spaces operating until later.

The investors chose not to build a hotel or apartments, instead choosing to create a space connected to the community. Filipe Teixeira explained that the intention is for the venue to be a passage and meeting point, where people can eat, go shopping or simply be, passing through different proposals throughout the day and night.
