The oriental wasps (Vespa orientalis) have become a significant threat in numerous provinces of Spain. Their presence has skyrocketed in recent years, and their expansion is of particular concern due to the impact on bees, biodiversity, and beekeeping.
A project supported by the Junta de Andalucía confirmed a 30% increase in this species between 2023 and 2024. This study identified Málaga, Cádiz, and Seville as some of the most affected provinces.
However, the expansion is not limited to these provinces alone. In reality, the oriental hornet is spreading to many other regions of Spain.
The situation represents a growing concern for the beekeeping sector and for the preservation of biodiversity in the country, given the fundamental role of bees in ecosystems.
