Managing frustration can make a difference in hiring: 59% of companies see flaws in soft skills

SAPO Notícias10 September 2026 at 08:06

More than half of employers in Portugal consider that the behavioral competencies of recent graduates fall short of the needs of the labor market. This is the main conclusion of a study that reveals that 59% of companies identify significant gaps in the so-called soft skills of newly qualified professionals.

Technical knowledge continues to be valued by employers, but it is no longer sufficient on its own to guarantee a hiring. Companies are now looking for professionals who combine solid technical competencies with interpersonal skills appropriate to the professional environment.

The ability to manage frustration emerges as one of the behavioral competencies highlighted as relevant in the hiring process. This skill, among other social competencies, is increasingly required by employers who evaluate candidates not only by their academic knowledge but also by their ability to deal with professional challenges.

The study indicates a growing trend for companies to prioritize behavioral competencies in their hiring decisions, warning of the need for recent graduates to develop these skills to adapt to the demands of the current labor market.
