Singapore's Prime Minister, Lawrence Wong, is currently the world's highest-paid political leader and will see his annual remuneration increase by approximately US$ 1.4 million, equivalent to R$ 5.7 million. With the change announced by the Singaporean government, his salary will rise from 2.2 million to 3.6 million Singapore dollars, which corresponds to about R$ 14 million per year or approximately US$ 2.8 million annually.
Wong stated that he will donate the additional amount received over the next five years to charitable institutions. The increase is part of a salary review that will also benefit ministers and other public servants of the country.
The Singaporean government argues that the measure is necessary to attract the best professionals to public service. Wong declared that Singapore needs to reduce the financial barrier to convince businesspeople and senior officials to leave lucrative careers and enter politics.
