São João de Meriti now has measures to protect women. The law that creates the Municipal Institutional Pact Against Femicide, called "Pacto Meriti pela Vida das Mulheres," was signed and published in the city's Official Gazette. The text brings together actions to prevent violence against women and improve care for victims.
According to the law, basic health units (UBS) and emergency care units (UPA), as well as prenatal and pediatric services, must create ways to identify possible signs of violence against women. In cases considered high risk, victims must be referred with priority to the Specialized Women's Assistance Service (Deam), the Judiciary, and the Public Defender's Office.
The measure also provides for groups to monitor men who have committed violence against women, with the aim of helping to prevent new episodes of violence from occurring.
