Vice-president of the Beja City Council suspends her mandate

Correio Alentejo10 September 2026 at 01:00

The vice-president of the Beja City Council, Liliana Cabecinha, elected through the Beja Consegue movement (PSD/CDS-PP/IL), suspended her mandate until January 10, 2027. The request was presented at the council meeting on Wednesday, the 9th, and approved unanimously. The replacement will be João Brás da Silva, until now chief of staff to Nuno Palma Ferro.

The reasons for the suspension were not revealed, although the possibility of Liliana Cabecinha leaving the executive due to "political disagreements" had been reported in the press in the previous days. The PS Concelhia reacted with a statement over the weekend, arguing that the municipality needed "stability, clarity, and responsibility in governance."

The Chega party, through deputy António Carneiro, also demanded on Monday "truth and clarifications about the political crisis" at the Beja City Council, questioning which political force actually governs the municipality and what the true scope of the understanding between PSD, CDS, IL, and PCP is.

The Beja Territorial Nucleus of the Iniciativa Liberal publicly thanked the work carried out by Liliana Cabecinha, guaranteeing that the commitment of the Beja Consegue movement to a management that is "more rigorous, transparent, ambitious, and closer to the people" remains unchanged.

STF decides next week whether to investigate Minister Moraes over messages with Vorcaro

The Supreme Federal Court scheduled an extraordinary session for Tuesday (15) to decide whether to open an investigation against Minister Alexandre de Moraes due to messages exchanged with banker Daniel Vorcaro. The Court president took several measures to contain the internal crisis, including removing Moraes from the fake news inquiry rapporteurship, blocking opposing decisions by Ministers André Mendonça and Flávio Dino, and maintaining Andrei Rodrigues as head of the Federal Police. The court will analyze the validity of the PF report and the Attorney General's office statement, which considered the document null. With Barroso's retirement still without a replacement, the STF operates with ten ministers, and legal scholars recommend that the magistrates directly involved abstain from the judgment.
