Ana Beatriz Nogueira and Andréia Horta star in "Goodnight, Mother," marking the first time the two actresses share a stage. In the performance, they portray Thelma and Jessi, mother and daughter separated by a large dining table that materializes the emotional distance between them. The play premieres this Thursday (10) at Teatro Poeira in Rio de Janeiro.
The play was written by American playwright Marsha Norman in 1982 and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Since then, it has been produced worldwide and adapted for film several times, including one starring Anne Bancroft and Sissy Spacek, directed by Tom Moore, which competed for the Golden Bear for Best Film at the 1987 Berlin Film Festival.
It was precisely at that 1987 Berlin Film Festival that Ana Beatriz discovered the play. On that same occasion, the actress won the Silver Bear for Best Actress for her performance in "Vera," by Sergio Toledo, and it was then that she fell in love with the story she now performs.
The play depicts a long and tense conversation between mother and daughter, which begins when the younger one announces to her mother that she will take her own life by the end of the night.
