Algarvian tennis player Tiago Pereira, currently ranked 355th in the ATP rankings, achieved this Tuesday, September 8th, the first career win against a world top 100 player by eliminating Argentine Marco Trungelliti, ranked 83rd, in the first round of the Seville Challenger 125. Pereira, 23 years old, entered the main draw as a lucky loser, after being eliminated in the final round of qualifying, and seized the second opportunity to defeat the Argentine in three sets.
The match in Seville was only the second career appearance for the Algarvian against a top 100 opponent. In April 2025, Tiago Pereira faced Dusan Lajovic, then ranked 87th, at a Challenger event in Jamor, having lost 6-2 and 7-6(0). This time, after two hours and 32 minutes, the Portuguese defeated Trungelliti by scores of 6-4, 4-6, and 6-4, achieving one of the most significant results of his professional career.
The victory guarantees Tiago Pereira a spot in the next round of the Seville Challenger 125, where he will face another Argentine player. The opponent will be Genaro Alberto Olivieri, currently ranked 223rd in the world, who in 2023 reached position 131 in the ATP rankings.
