Maranhão is among the northeastern states that most increased the arrival of foreign tourists in 2026. According to a survey by the Brazilian International Tourism Promotion Agency (Embratur), conducted in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism and the Federal Police and published by the portal O Imparcial, between January and April of this year, the state recorded growth of 257.1% in the number of international visitors compared to the same period the previous year.
The advance is also reflected in the main tourist destinations in Maranhão, especially in Lençóis Maranhenses, one of the most sought-after postcards by Brazilian and foreign tourists. Only in January 2026, the two main access points to the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, located in Barreirinhas and Santo Amaro, received 35.3 thousand visitors.
