A court in Rio converted the in-flagrante detention of Natalia Mafra Tupinambá, 39, suspected of having stabbed her mother, Graça Maria Caldas Mafra, 73, to death in an apartment in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, in the Southwest Zone of the city, into preventive detention. The elderly woman was rescued and taken to Municipal Hospital Lourenço Jorge, in Barra da Tijuca, but did not survive her injuries.
Military Police were called by residents of the condominium on the morning of the 7th, after neighbors reported hearing screams coming from the property. At the scene, the officers found Graça bloodied and with stab wounds. According to the in-flagrante arrest report, Natalia admitted to having stabbed her mother and presented the knife used in the crime, which was seized by the officers.
When questioned at the Capital Homicide Police Station, where she was formally charged with homicide, Natalia stated, according to police, that she had previously been hospitalized for psychiatric problems.
