The turns to get to Baixa de Coimbra: Rua da Sofia has restricted traffic

Campeão das Províncias9 September 2026 at 21:30

Today, September 10, Coimbra experienced a historic day with the entry into operation of the Metrobus up to Praça da República and the complete restructuring of the city's Urban Transport lines, operated by SMTUC. This profound transformation in the city's transport system represents a significant change in Coimbra's urban mobility.

With these changes, traffic restrictions on Rua da Sofia also came into effect, which was the main thoroughfare and access road to the Baixa (lower town) of the city. From this date onwards, drivers could no longer drive freely through this historic street.

Rua da Sofia, which for decades was the central axis of access to the lower area of Coimbra, thus sees its role in road circulation profoundly altered. This change is part of a broader strategy to reformulate mobility in the city, with the implementation of the new Metrobus system as the central piece of this transformation.
