Population aging accelerates preventive health

oglobo9 September 2026 at 21:37

The Brazilian population is aging rapidly. Life expectancy at birth reached 76.6 years in 2024, representing a significant increase compared to the 71.1 years recorded in 2000, according to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). During the same period, the proportion of people aged 60 or older almost doubled, rising from 8.7% to 15.6% of the total population, corresponding to approximately 33 million Brazilians.

IBGE projections indicate that this demographic trend should intensify in the coming decades. The Brazilian population is expected to stop growing in 2041, and by 2070, it is estimated that approximately 37.8% of inhabitants will be 60 years or older, totaling approximately 75.3 million people in this age group.

This advance in longevity is causing a paradigm shift in Brazilian society. The population's focus is gradually shifting from disease treatment to health prevention, reflecting a new approach to body care and well-being.

The movement is also manifesting in the economic landscape. The Brazilian wellness market was valued at US$ 91.3 billion in 2025, with projections to reach US$ 222.4 billion by 2034, representing an average annual expansion of 10.4%. Brazil ranks among the largest wellness consumer markets in the world.
