Man dies after being stung by Asian wasp in Felgueiras

Correio da Manhã9 September 2026 at 19:58

A man died after being stung by an Asian wasp in Felgueiras. The incident occurred while the victim was helping relatives during the grape harvest, the agricultural activity of collecting grapes.

The Asian wasp, also known as the Asian hornet or vespa velutina, is an invasive species originating from Asia that has been spreading through various regions of Portugal. This species is particularly aggressive and its stings can pose a danger to people who are allergic or when they occur in large numbers.

Local authorities were alerted to the incident, but despite their efforts, it was not possible to save the victim. The case once again raises awareness about the risks associated with the proliferation of this invasive species in the north of the country.

Felgueiras, located in the Porto district, has seen a growing presence of Asian wasp nests in recent years, which has concerned civil protection authorities and the local population.
