A 69-year-old man died this Wednesday after being stung by an Asian wasp in Jugueiros, in the municipality of São Pedro do Sul, Viseu district. The incident occurred during the grape harvest, a typical agricultural activity in the region during this time of year.
The victim was taken to Viseu Hospital after the sting but could not withstand the effects of the Asian wasp venom. Authorities confirmed it was a severe allergic reaction to the insect sting.
The Asian wasp, also known as the yellow-legged hornet (vespa velutina), is an invasive species that has been spreading through various regions of Portugal in recent years. Its presence represents a growing risk for agricultural workers and for national beekeeping.
