The Egyptian TV presenter Sarah Khalifa, 39, was sentenced to death by hanging for involvement in a synthetic drug manufacturing and trafficking scheme in Egypt. The verdict was announced last Saturday (5) by a Cairo criminal court. The case gained international attention and since then various details have been disclosed by the local press.
Sarah Khalifa reacted to the sentence citing health problems, including a cancer diagnosis, and denying any involvement with drugs. According to reports from Egyptian media and a video circulating on social media, she presented medical reports that would prove the existence of tumors and stated that she doesn't even smoke cigarettes.
In her defense, Sarah asked for mercy and humanity, swearing to be innocent. She questioned the reasons for the accusation, suggesting she could be being judged for her loyalty to the Egyptian people. The presenter tried to prove through the medical documents presented to the court that she could not be involved in drug-related activities.
