Inês Sousa Real considered the acquittal of the animal abuse suspects in Santo Tirso unjust. The politician, who belongs to the PAN party (People-Animals-Nature), expressed her opposition to the court decision that acquitted the defendants in the case.

The case involved more than 230 crimes related to companion animal abuse, abandonment, and abuse of power. Authorities had identified a high number of animal violations in the Santo Tirso region.

Sousa Real criticized the court's decision, considering that it does not reflect the gravity of the crimes committed against animals. The acquittal of the suspects generated controversy and debate about the application of the law in animal protection cases in Portugal.
