Lisbon rents increased 103% over ten years, transforming the Portuguese capital into one of the most concerning cases in Europe regarding the real estate market. This sharp growth has been generating growing concerns both nationally and at the community level.
A European commissioner is calling for restraint on Short-Term Rentals as a measure to curb this trend of excessive property appreciation. The European Commission has been proposing tighter limits on short-term rental activity in the major urban centers of the continent.
Lisbon was specifically presented as one of the most alarming examples of this situation, where pressure on the housing market has been felt particularly intensely in recent years.
Carlos Moedas, European Commissioner, approved absolute containment areas at 10%, a figure that falls below the European proposal currently under discussion. This position reflects the attempt to find a balance between the regulation of Short-Term Rentals and the preservation of an economic activity relevant to the tourism sector.
