There are more than 3,140 buildings with asbestos coverings in the Azores

In the Azores there are more than 3,140 properties with asbestos coverings, according to data from the Regional Government. These structures may constitute a risk to public health, since asbestos is a dangerous material when degraded or handled.

The overwhelming majority of these buildings, almost 90%, are privately owned. This means that the responsibility for the removal and replacement of these dangerous coverings lies with the property owners.

The Regional Executive made this information available as part of a broader survey on the situation of asbestos in buildings in the autonomous region. Asbestos was widely used in construction until it was banned due to the serious health risks, mainly associated with respiratory diseases.
