The Portuguese Government announced a new extraordinary supplement for over two million pensioners, covering pensions up to 1,611.13 euros. Payment is expected to be made together with the December pension, with an estimated budgetary impact of around 400 million euros. The measure will have a progressive nature, but not all the application rules have been disclosed yet, including the amounts for each pension level.
However, there is a precedent that may help clarify the process. In 2025, the extraordinary supplement was granted automatically to eligible pensioners, without them having to submit any request. Decree-Law No. 86-A/2025 expressly established that the award was official, meaning payment was processed automatically by the responsible entities, both from Social Security and the Caixa Geral de Aposentações.
Despite this precedent, it is not yet possible to guarantee that the new supplement for December 2026 will follow the same automatic procedure. The Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, announced that the measure will be implemented at the next Council of Ministers meeting, at which stage further details about the amounts and specific processing conditions of the support should be made known.
Therefore, pensioners should not, for now, carry out any procedure based on the rules of the previous supplement. It will be necessary to wait for the implementation of the measure to confirm whether, as happened in 2025, the money will automatically reach beneficiaries who meet the established conditions.
