The Council of Ministers decided to initiate the process for converting the Polytechnic University of Bragança into the University of Bragança and the Interior North. The decision was announced by the Minister of Education, Science and Innovation, Fernando Alexandre, after a technical analysis aimed at increasing the capacity for transformation and development of the territory.
Prime Minister Luís Montenegro had already announced the creation of the new university during the 22nd edition of the PSD Summer University in Castelo de Vide. After the Council of Ministers held at the university itself, Montenegro stressed that the deliberation reflects governmental strategies in the area of Education and is an advancement not only for Bragança, but for the entire region and for Portugal.
The rector of the current Polytechnic University of Bragança, Orlando Rodrigues, considered the Government's decision an act of courage, stating that the executive is giving a concrete response to the institution's persistence in becoming a university and promising to transform the territory into an area with high scientific intensity.
The Polytechnic University of Bragança currently has six schools located in Bragança, Mirandela and Chaves, accommodating approximately 10,000 students, of which 30% are foreign.
