The mayor of Rio, Eduardo Paes (PSD), visited the Pavuna subway station, the end point of Line 2 in the city's North Zone, where he criticized the lack of new stations for the system in the last decade. During the visit, he promised to extend the subway to cities in Baixada Fluminense, such as São João de Meriti and Belford Roxo.
Paes stated that there are two fronts of action: extending Line 2 to Praça XV and starting Line 3 toward São Gonçalo, in addition to connecting Pavuna with a branch to Belford Roxo passing through São João de Meriti. He said it is possible to reduce the subway fare, but conditioned any subsidy increase on prior control of the electronic ticketing system.
The mayor reaffirmed that a mafia controls the current ticketing system and said it is necessary to implement a new electronic ticketing system, similar to the Jaé system adopted in the capital. According to him, today the information belongs to the city government, but there are control problems with the existing system.
