Lagarde closer to leaving the ECB early

Jornal de Negócios9 September 2026 at 15:00

Christine Lagarde is closer to leaving the leadership of the European Central Bank before the end of her term. The Frenchwoman, who has held the position of ECB president since 2019 with an eight-year mandate, met on Tuesday with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

The meeting between the two leaders occurred in a context of speculation about a possible early departure of Lagarde. Friedrich Merz is reportedly considering a German candidacy for the presidency of the European Central Bank.

This development comes at a time when ECB leadership has become a topic of debate among the main eurozone countries. The possibility of a German successor represents a significant shift in the power dynamics within the institution.
