The president of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), Edson Fachin, cancelled the plenary session that was scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. The measure was taken after a dispute between ministers Flávio Dino and André Mendonça regarding the director-general of the Federal Police. Dino had ordered the return of Andrei Rodrigues to the position of director-general of the PF, reversing a previous decision by Mendonça that had ordered Rodrigues' removal.
The session cancellation aims to avoid a direct confrontation between the ministers in the face of the escalating crisis, with opposing factions of the court in divergent positions. Fachin's decision also aims to buy time so he can broker a solution to the impasse.
The plenary was supposed to resume on Wednesday the trial of an action that discusses the rules on social contribution of rural producers to the Rural Worker Assistance Fund (Funrural). The central question of the process is whether the company that acquired the agricultural and livestock products is responsible for collecting the social contribution of rural producers.
The agenda for the Funrural trial was originally scheduled for last Wednesday, but was postponed at the suggestion of the rapporteur, Minister Gilmar Mendes. Funrural is a social security contribution aimed at rural workers.
