The parents of a child who died in 2021 in Leiria are now filing a civil action against the State, claiming almost 500 thousand euros for their son's death. The child died as a result of a goalpost falling during a physical education class.
The incident occurred about four years ago, when the student was hit by a goalpost that toppled over during the school activity. This tragic event subsequently resulted in criminal proceedings against the responsible teacher.
In 2025, the teacher was sentenced to one year and two months in prison, with a suspended sentence, for negligent homicide. The criminal sentence recognized the teacher's responsibility for the accident that caused the student's death.
In the civil action now filed, the parents are demanding significant financial compensation, in an amount of around 500 thousand euros, for the numerous damages resulting from the loss of their son. The proceedings are ongoing in parallel with the legal consequences already applied to the teacher.
