AEMET certifies that summer, with 61 days of extreme temperatures, has been the hottest in history

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General9 September 2026 at 13:39

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) confirmed that the summer of 2024, covering the months of June, July and August, was the hottest in history in Spain since the beginning of the historical series in 1961. The average temperature recorded was 24.5°C.

This value represents an increase of 0.3°C compared to the previous summer, which until now held the record for hottest. Thus, AEMET validated what was already a widespread feeling among the population.

The agency officially reported this data on Wednesday, confirming through concrete measurements what many already perceived subjectively. Year after year, temperature records continue to be broken.

Climate change experts have been warning for decades that these patterns of increasing temperatures would become increasingly frequent, a prediction that has been consistently materializing.

Weather alert indicates risk of tornadoes in São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul and Paraná

Climatempo issued a tornado risk alert for the states of Paraná, São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul on the 10th and 11th. The combination of meteorological factors increases the possibility of formation of "supercells," which, in addition to tornadoes, can generate microbursts, hail, winds above 90 km/h and intense storms. The phenomenon occurs due to the clash between a warm air mass and a cold air mass, which favors atmospheric instability in the region.
