Finance Minister: "Portuguese people will have more income in November due to the IRS reduction"

SIC Notícias9 September 2026 at 13:10

Finance Minister Joaquim Miranda Sarmento gave an interview to SIC Notícias where he clarified the new fiscal measures announced by the prime minister during the censure motion debate. Sarmento stated that Portuguese people will have more disposable income starting in November, as a result of the reduction in personal income tax (IRS).

The government official explained that this measure represents a tax relief for taxpayers, contributing to an increase in the purchasing power of Portuguese families. The IRS reduction was one of the main promises announced by the prime minister in the context of the parliamentary debate.

Regarding public accounts, Joaquim Miranda Sarmento predicts that the budget balance will be "at most, a zero balance." This projection indicates an almost perfect equilibrium between state revenue and expenditure, avoiding a significant deficit.

The interview takes place during the political debate on the censure motion, a context in which the government chose to detail its economic and fiscal priorities for the country.
