The General Court of the European Union upheld the decision to apply sanctions on Roman Abramovich, rejecting the appeal filed by the Russian-Israeli businessman. The court considered Abramovich's defense arguments to be unfounded.
The businessman, who also holds Portuguese nationality obtained through Sephardic ancestry, attempted to argue that the sanctions should not be maintained because it would have been working groups and not the EU Council that actually adopted the restrictive measures.
The court rejected this argument, confirming the legality of the process that led to the imposition of sanctions in the context of the war in Ukraine. The decision remains within the scope of restrictive measures adopted by the EU against figures linked to the Russian regime.
This ruling represents a judicial defeat for Abramovich, who was trying to lift the sanctions imposed by the European Union since 2022, when measures were adopted against Russian oligarchs following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
