Trump confirms Brazil as meat supplier to the US and faces resistance from cattle ranchers

President Donald Trump confirmed that Brazil and Argentina will be the main suppliers of beef imported by the United States, within a strategy to increase supply and reduce prices for the American consumer. The government opened space for the entry of 300,000 additional metric tons of lean beef with reduced tariff for 90 days, destined mainly for ground beef production, while the American herd recovers from the lowest level in approximately 75 years. The measure generated strong reaction from cattle ranchers and Republican lawmakers, who fear harm to local producers and sanitary risks such as the reintroduction of foot-and-mouth disease. The announcement occurred during an event in the Oval Office with the presence of Joesley Batista, controller of JBS, the world's largest meat processor. Simultaneously, the government signed executive orders to expand competition in the processing sector, allowing producers to sell meat directly between states.
