The Minister of the Environment, Maria da Graça Carvalho, argued that fuel taxation is "very important" to fund the National Health Service and Education. These statements were made in the context of the debate on fiscal policy applied to fuels in Portugal.

The minister reiterated that the government is not obtaining additional revenue from the rise in fuel prices. According to her explanation, any increase in VAT revenue is offset by a reduction in ISP, which cancels out the potential fiscal gain.

Maria da Graça Carvalho emphasized that fuel taxation plays a crucial role in financing essential public services, highlighting the strategic importance of this revenue source for the State Budget.
