Broadcom reclaims vSphere Standard after VMware clients leave

Notícias Portugal9 September 2026 at 12:26

Broadcom is preparing to relaunch VMware vSphere Standard as a simpler alternative to VMware Cloud Foundation, responding to demand from companies seeking only virtualization without additional private cloud components. During the VMware Explore 2026 event, the company acknowledged that it had concentrated excessive efforts on VCF, especially for small and medium businesses.

Broadcom acquired VMware for approximately $69 billion in November 2023 and reorganized its commercial approach, prioritizing a reduced portfolio with VCF as the main product. This change generated commercial proposals more comprehensive than many companies wanted, leading several clients to migrate to alternatives such as Proxmox VE, Nutanix, and Microsoft Hyper-V.

The new vSphere Standard will primarily serve companies that only need server virtualization and centralized administration, through a subscription model based on licensed cores. Current documentation indicates that it will be possible to license a minimum of 16 cores per processor, including vCenter Server, although pricing and commercial conditions details have not yet been disclosed.

The competitive landscape in the virtualization market has brought various options for clients, with companies like Proxmox VE and HPE gaining ground among service providers and organizations accustomed to working with Linux. Broadcom's real challenge will be setting a competitive price that justifies a possible migration back for clients who have already adopted other platforms.
