Qatar: budget deficit more than doubles to 5 billion as LNG exports disrupted

Euronews Portugal9 September 2026 at 13:06

Qatar recorded a budget deficit that more than doubled, reaching 5 billion dollars in the first half, surpassing the annual forecast initially set by the country.

The Doha government announced operational cuts to address the situation, but clarified that these do not cover salaries or capital projects, suggesting that the austerity measures are concentrated in other areas of public expenditure.

Qatar's liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports have been disrupted, which has significantly contributed to the deterioration of the country's fiscal situation.

European gas buyers face delivery cancellations until early November, in a situation caused by the war with Iran, which directly affects energy supplies.
