Zema seeks closer ties with evangelical segment and delivers 'letter of principles' to Christians

oglobo9 September 2026 at 11:36

Romeu Zema, a former governor of Minas Gerais and a pre-candidate for President of Brazil with the Novo party, has prepared a "letter of principles" aimed at the evangelical audience in a strategy to win votes from conservative voters. The document will be released during a schedule event by the presidential candidate in Brasília.

The letter is divided into 12 thematic areas and addresses topics such as religious freedom, criticism of abortion and the "trivialization" of drug use, as well as promising to end bets. The text also defends "life from conception" and takes a firm stance against any attempt to expand the currently permitted abortion hypotheses.

The document defines the family as "the foundation of society" and promises to protect children and adolescents "from all types of exploitation, abuse, pornography, early sexualization/erotization, and inappropriate content." The text also states that Zema is firmly against the trivialization of drugs.

She highlighted that smaller entities, such as parish councils, raise greater concerns regarding this new law. She also warned about the problem of long-term contracts, whose impact affects future generations and which, according to the official, are not being safeguarded by the current system.
