The 38-year-old Canadian runner Kalie McCrystal has been missing for more than a week in the Alps while training to try to break the record for climbing and descending the Matterhorn, one of the most famous mountains in Europe, at 4,478 meters altitude.
The aerial searches dedicated to the athlete were suspended on Tuesday, after days of helicopter operations. The runner intended to complete the ascent and descent of the mountain in under five hours.
The last confirmed contact occurred when a guide found the Canadian above the Jean-Antoine Carrel refuge, located at more than 3,800 meters altitude, on the Italian side of the mountain. The guide saw her continuing the climb, quite fast, and she told him she was training because she wanted to try to break the record.
Since then, no one has seen Kalie McCrystal.
