The mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, revealed that the city concealed information about the risks of toxic air following the September 11, 2001 attacks. Mamdani announced the release of more than 170,000 pages of documents that had remained largely secret for decades.
The documents show that New York authorities were aware of the health risks caused by inhaling toxic particles released by the collapse of the Twin Towers. Despite this knowledge, officials continued to publicly assure that it was safe to breathe in the areas near the destroyed towers.
This revelation comes on the 24th anniversary of the terrorist attacks and comes at a time when thousands of people continue to suffer from illnesses related to exposure to contaminated air. Many survivors and rescue workers developed serious health problems in the years following the disaster.
