The Australian Parliament is set to review a proposal that would allow users to choose whether or not they want to receive algorithm-selected content on platforms like TikTok, Instagram and Facebook. The change is part of a broader package of measures to increase online safety and give people greater control over the content shown on social media.
Under the proposal, new and existing users would receive a notification to define how they want to receive content in the default feed. One option would keep algorithmic personalization, with the system recommending posts deemed relevant to each person. The other would allow recommendations to be turned off, causing the feed to show only recently published content in chronological order.
