An iPhone in a 1937 painting? Historians have an explanation

SAPO Notícias9 September 2026 at 08:51

Internet users have been debating a 1937 painting that, according to them, shows a figure holding what appears to be an iPhone. The images went viral on social media, with many people believing that the modern electronic device would be present in the old work. The discussion rekindled interest in the artistic work and generated speculation about a possible technological prediction from the past.

Historians, however, offer a simpler and more rational explanation for the supposed anomaly. According to experts, the object that many identify as an iPhone is actually a small screen device from that era, such as a pocket calculator or a rudimentary communication device. These technologies existed in previous decades and were more common than one might think.

The painting in question dates from 1937, a period when consumer electronics were beginning to develop. Although smartphones as we know them today did not exist, there were small portable devices with screens that could be confused with modern technology when observed outside their historical context.

This case illustrates how human perception can be influenced by contemporary technological knowledge, leading to the incorrect identification of ancient objects. The controversy also demonstrates the power of social media in turning artworks into viral phenomena, often without considering the appropriate historical context.
