Meta, Mark Zuckerberg's company that owns Facebook and Instagram, agreed to pay up to $18 billion to settle lawsuits filed by 29 U.S. states that accused the platforms of being designed to addict children and young users. The settlement was reached during a trial in Federal Court in California, also involving consumer protection lawsuits filed by California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey, as well as proceedings related to violations of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) of 2000.
