Almost half of Portuguese students use AI weekly, but only 57% learn to evaluate it

SAPO Notícias9 September 2026 at 08:12

Almost half of Portuguese students use artificial intelligence tools at least once a week, a figure that is above the average of OECD countries. However, only 57% of these students learn to critically evaluate the responses generated by this technology, which represents a significant gap in preparing young people for the digital future.

The new PISA report reveals that Portugal stands out for the frequent use of AI among students, ranking above the international average on this indicator. This data contrasts with the difficulties identified in critical thinking abilities regarding machine-generated content.

The study results also warn of a significant decline in reading and mathematics performance among Portuguese students. This decrease concerns experts, who associate the phenomenon with how students interact with technology and the need for better pedagogical practices.

The report also draws attention to inequalities in access to digital and AI skills, emphasizing that not all students have the same opportunities to develop these essential capabilities for their professional and academic future.

OpenAI resolves decades-old mathematical enigma in 88 hours

OpenAI managed to solve a decades-old mathematical problem in just 88 hours, using an innovative approach that involved more than 10,000 artificial intelligence agents working in a coordinated manner. During the process, the system produced more than 130 billion tokens, the basic unit used to measure the volume of content generated. This achievement demonstrates the potential of multi-agent systems in solving complex problems that have challenged human mathematicians for decades.
