The results of the latest edition of the PISA program (Programme for International Student Assessment) have been released and reveal that nearly half of students worldwide already use artificial intelligence as a study tool. This data comes in a context of increasing digitalization of education globally.
In Portugal, the results place the country statistically close to the average of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), meaning that Portuguese students are at the level of their peers in developed countries in terms of academic performance.
However, despite this relatively positive position compared to OECD countries, Portugal shows worse results than those recorded 20 years ago. This setback contrasts with the technological progress seen in the same period, including the emergence and expansion of artificial intelligence tools.
The data highlights the need for reflection on educational policies in Portugal, at a time when technology is evolving rapidly but Portuguese students' academic results are not keeping pace with this positive trend, showing significant deterioration over the past two decades.
