Six couples to tie the knot on Saint Anthony's Day. Is there salvation for this Lisbon tradition?

SAPO Notícias9 September 2026 at 08:28

The Lisbon tradition associated with Saint Anthony, known as the Matchmaker of Lisbon, continues to mark the city with the celebration of couple weddings. The tradition raises questions about its continuity and relevance today.

Director Ruben Alves, known for the success of "The Gilded Cage", presents the new film "Saint Anthony, the Matchmaker of Lisbon", which arrives at NOS cinemas on September 10.

The feature film features the participation of well-known Portuguese actors, namely Rita Blanco and Joaquim Monchique in the lead roles.

The film production emerges as a way to celebrate and preserve this tradition so deeply rooted in Lisbon culture, bringing renewed attention to the custom of couples marrying during the festivities of Saint Anthony.
