Can the Canary Islands Experience a Crisis Like the One in Ceuta?

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General9 September 2026 at 08:00

The migratory crisis in Ceuta immediately triggered alarms in the Canary Islands, not only because of the magnitude of the numbers – 80,000 people crossed the border from Morocco in just two days – but also because the Archipelago knows well what it means to face a migratory crisis. Since then, the possibility that what occurred in the autonomous city could find a reflection in the Islands has been present on several occasions. This idea gains special relevance when taking into account the similar crises that the Canary Islands has already faced, being the main gateway to Europe.

Should you move from the left lane when the right lane is free within the city? Find out if you are required to change lanes

Within a locality, drivers in Portugal are not required to immediately change to the right lane just because it is free, and may travel in the lane most convenient to their destination. This rule, set out in Article 14 of the Road Code, differs from the one applied outside localities and motorways, where travel must obligatorily be made in the rightmost lane. The choice of lane must be related to the intended route, and lane changes should only be made to change direction, overtake, stop, or park. The proximity of another vehicle behind does not, in itself, create an obligation to change lanes. Violations are punished with fines between 60 and 300 euros, but traveling in the left lane with the right lane free does not automatically constitute a traffic offense.
