The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed it attacked two American warships and Washington's bases in Jordan, in retaliation for United States attacks on Iranian oil tankers. According to the IRGC, Tehran struck the Al Azraq base, 100 kilometers east of Amman, and two American destroyers carrying cruise missiles. The attack caused damage to facilities where F-35, F-16 and F-15 fighter jets are stationed, as well as to the combat aircraft shelters at the American base.
The Jordanian Army claimed it destroyed 18 of the 20 Iranian missiles heading toward its country, while the other two fell in uninhabited areas. For its part, the United States Army Central Command (CentCom) stated it destroyed five vessels associated with the IRGC, in response to Tehran's previous attacks on an American warship.
The Iranian attack constitutes retaliation for American bombings against Iranian oil tankers. According to the Iranian Tasnim news agency, a small Iranian oil tanker was targeted by an American missile attack near Kharg Island, in southern Iran, without causing casualties.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned during a visit to Colombia that Iran continues to attempt to attack American warships and that, whenever they do or try to do so, they will lose oil tankers.
