The United States announced having destroyed five vessels associated with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, in an attack targeting what Washington considers to be an oil smuggling network used by Iran to finance its activities in the region.
In retaliation, Tehran stated it carried out attacks against the American military base of Al-Azraq, located in Jordan, as well as against two American destroyers in the Gulf.
This episode marks a significant escalation in tensions between the two countries, at a time when relations between the USA and Iran are already highly deteriorated due to the Iranian nuclear program and Tehran's support for armed groups in the Middle East region.
American authorities have not yet officially commented on the alleged Iranian attacks, which come in direct response to the American military action against the oil tankers.
