The minimum wage in mainland Portugal increased by 50 euros in 2026, rising from 870 to 920 euros gross per month. The amount took effect on January 1, 2026 through Decree-Law No. 139/2025, of December 29. This amount represents the monthly minimum that must be guaranteed to workers, applicable proportionally to part-time contracts. In the autonomous regions, the amounts are higher: in the Azores the Guaranteed Minimum Monthly Remuneration is 966 euros and in Madeira it is 980 euros.
The 920 euros is a gross amount, before deductions. The Social Security contribution corresponds to 11%, that is, 101.20 euros on the minimum wage. The withholding tables for 2026 apply a rate of 0% for monthly remuneration of 920 euros. Thus, a worker receives approximately 818.80 euros net per month after the Social Security deduction, without considering income tax.
For a 40-hour weekly schedule, the reference hourly rate is 5.31 euros gross, calculated using the formula provided in the Labour Code. The full-time worker who receives the minimum wage for a full year receives 14 monthly payments of 920 euros, which amounts to 12,880 euros gross annually. The holiday and Christmas allowances may be paid in full or distributed across twelve months.
In the Azores, the amount of 966 euros corresponds to a regional increase of 5% on the national GMMR, representing 5.57 euros per hour and 13,524 euros annually. In Madeira, the amount of 980 euros represents an increase of 65 euros compared to the 915 euros of 2025, equivalent to 5.65 euros per hour and 13,720 euros per year.
