Fachin gives 72h for Mendonça to respond to AGU request about removal of Andrei Rodrigues

cbn9 September 2026 at 01:16

The president of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), Edson Fachin, determined a 72-hour deadline for Minister André Mendonça to respond to the request from the Attorney General's Office (AGU) to suspend the removal of the Federal Police (PF) director-general, Andrei Rodrigues. The determination was made after the AGU appealed, on this Tuesday (08), of Mendonça's decision that removed Rodrigues and the Police Intelligence director, Leandro Almada.

In the petition presented to the STF, the AGU states there is "serious harm to public and administrative order" and argues that the measure interferes with the president's prerogative to choose, appoint, and dismiss the Federal Police chief. The body argues that the production and dissemination of the intelligence reports cited by Mendonça as justification for the removals were already under analysis by Fachin, who had given five days for the PF's response on the case.

According to the AGU, the discontinuity of the institution's management could compromise judicial police activities and cause disorganization of services. The appeal was filed after Mendonça ordered the removal of the two PF directors, a decision that is now being challenged by the AGU on behalf of the Executive Branch.

Is a right denied because it doesn't generate profit?

The article questions the logic of closing the ferry between Madeira and mainland Portugal simply because it is not profitable, comparing this situation with the hypothetical decision to close hospitals or roads because they don't generate profit. The author argues that while for hospitals and roads such reasoning would be considered absurd, in the case of maritime transport between Madeira and the mainland, the lack of profitability argument seems to suffice to close the discussion, which reveals a contradiction in how essential public services are evaluated.
