The Portuguese Institute for the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) confirmed that a "downburst" was the origin of the damage caused by bad weather in the district of Aveiro. This meteorological phenomenon is characterized by very intense downward air currents that, upon reaching the surface, spread horizontally with great force.
The strong wind gusts were accompanied by heavy rain and hail, creating severe weather conditions in the region. The phenomenon caused significant damage to various structures and urban equipment.
Among the main damages recorded are destroyed or damaged roofs, vehicles hit by falling objects or trees, uprooted trees and destroyed urban furniture. The force of the wind was sufficient to cause destruction in various areas of the district.
IPMA identified the downburst as the specific cause after analysis of the atmospheric conditions and destruction patterns observed in the field. This type of phenomenon is particularly dangerous due to its ability to generate destructive winds concentrated in a limited area.
