IPMA (Portuguese Institute for the Sea and the Atmosphere) explained the meteorological phenomenon that hit the district of Aveiro. It was a thunderstorm that combined specific atmospheric conditions to produce particularly intense effects.
The phenomenon was characterized by the fall of large hail, something that resulted from the combination of factors present during the thunderstorm. Additionally, a strong downward air current occurred, technically known as a downburst.
The Arouca meteorological radar managed to record the downburst, confirming the intensity of the phenomenon that struck the Aveiro region. This type of downward current is characterized by wind gusts that rapidly head toward the ground, spreading horizontally upon reaching the surface.
