French wine is in trouble

ZAP Notícias8 September 2026 at 20:30

The hottest summer ever recorded in France has significantly reduced vineyard productivity, leading to French wine production falling for the third consecutive year. In the Champagne region, the harvest has dropped to almost half compared to last year, reflecting the severe impact of extreme weather conditions on the country's vineyards.

The French Ministry of Agriculture announced on Monday that, after a summer marked by heatwaves, wildfires and severe drought, wine production in France is expected to be one of the worst in the last 30 years. The first official estimate points to a production of 33.9 million hectolitres, equivalent to approximately 4.5 billion bottles, representing a 6% decrease compared to the previous period.
