State returns to REN. Montenegro believes in cost reduction

RTP Notícias8 September 2026 at 21:30

The Portuguese State will regain a stake in the National Energy Network (REN), marking the return to the company 14 years after its privatization. This decision represents a reversal of the privatization policy that had been previously implemented in the Portuguese energy sector.

The measure comes in a context of reassessing the State's strategy regarding the country's strategic infrastructure. State participation in REN aims to ensure greater control over a sector considered essential for the functioning of the economy and for national energy security.

Prime Minister Montenegro expresses his conviction that this reintegration will enable a reduction in costs for the State and for consumers. This position reflects the government's expectation that public management or state participation may bring economic benefits compared to the previous private capital situation.

"Benfica is a product of the people and we want it to stay that way"

Benfica's SAD recorded profits of 19 million euros last season, down 44% from the previous year, due to the absence of the Club World Cup and a poor performance in the Champions League, where failing to qualify represented 30 million euros less in revenue. Vice-president Nuno Catarino assured that the club will offset this shortfall without resorting to player sales, drawing on its own capital of 135 million euros. Debt exceeded 500 million euros, but Catarino highlighted that assets also reached 650 million euros for the first time. Regarding the centralisation of television rights, Benfica admits it may go to court, arguing the process could constitute expropriation of investments made in Benfica TV. Catarino reasserted that Benfica is "a product of the people," maintaining its commitment to affordable prices for supporters, with moderate increases aligned with inflation.
