Lisbon Municipal Assembly advocates strengthening security "without alarmism"

Now8 September 2026 at 20:46

The Lisbon Municipal Assembly advocated strengthening security in the city, but without falling into alarmism. This position arose in a meeting where the need to increase the number of police in Lisbon was discussed.

The president of the Lisbon City Council, Carlos Moedas, from PSD, was absent from the session. In his place, Vice-President Gonçalo Reis, also from PSD, took the floor to address the security issue.

Gonçalo Reis emphasized the demand for more police in Lisbon and guaranteed that the municipal executive will not rest until this situation is resolved. The vice-president also stated that there is willingness to provide financial resources to strengthen security.

In addition to the request for more police forces, the executive mentioned the investment already made in public lighting, video surveillance, and night watchmen as complementary measures to improve security in the city.

AfD triumph "will contribute to the narrative that the far-right is victorious across borders", but domino effect is not inevitable

The far-right victory in Germany, although significant, should not be seen as an inevitable signal of a domino effect in other European countries, according to analysts consulted by Expresso. However, the more immediate danger is already present: the inclusion of radical parties in government coalitions and the programmatic convergence of mainstream parties toward these ideas, in a futile attempt to stem the loss of voters. Analysts warn that the narrative of a victorious far-right across borders can be dangerous, but that each national context has its own particularities.
